Most of my team-based experiences have been through the involvement of athletic sport activities. Sharing a common goal and being on the same page when it comes to achieving high standards as a team is imperative. Which is why I selected as an important factor in creating an effective high performance team. As described there are two components I feel could be taken into consideration. First off, a team must share a common purpose or goal to function as a team. A clear purpose gives reasons for a team to commit and collaborate in many aspects as a whole. Recalling back and being part of many teams organized to be the best in the state was very interesting. I gained knowledge and skills that I put in practice when dealing with the different individuals who possess different talents. Putting and gathering individuals who are the best at what they do and simply putting them against an opponent is simply not the answer. In a team there must be chemistry and each has to trust and cooperate with each other. Every individual has its own way of doing a certain task and must be respected among one another. That is why it is imperative that as a group we communicate to know each other’s background, values, and simply become like a family. Growing up I have learned how values and being fully committed to any organization shows how we give our outmost potential as an individual. Soccer has thought me great values and understanding that we sometimes need to be leaders, but also let others lead when we are in need of being motivated. Letting others lead also makes a team stronger, this shows that there is not one primary person in power. Every person equally contributes gains the trust and respect of his teammates. Sometimes we need others to take over and give us the power and energy and this is brought out through motivation.
Secondly, a team must be on the same page with challenges and task to fully function as a whole team. When I was participating in soccer tournaments, which consisted of many teams competing and the main objective was finishing in first place. Before the event started the coach would share an inspiring story and also took the time to explain the task that needed to be done. Introducing the challenge gave us a sense of determination to reach our goal and if we felt short we were always praise for our efforts. This could be sought out through the goal setting theory identifying how intensity, persistence, and task strategies will enable task performance achievement. As we invest our time and contribution we become more committed to the task on hand. This could relate to the group goal setting which also express how team members can motivate each other and seek drive through that motivation. When we find something meaningful in what we do and enjoy it with a group of people that work as one we tend to work harder at it. I have been fortunate to have met many teammates and coaches who have had an impact in my life both on and off the field. Giving me a set of values, ideas, and self-determination for what crosses my path.
All in all there are many factors that could contribute toward creating a high performance team. As our model indicate other factors such as trust between members, creativity, understanding boundaries, commitment, dedication, and organized work. Each one serves as a function and should be taken into account when trying to put together a team. Although there is no perfect way about how to create the ideal team the above components I feel are vital if I was to look for in creating an effective team in the future. I believe that each team member is different in values, ideas, and brings an individual sense of creativity. A good team will always know how and when to finish a goal together as a whole no matter how different each one is. In the end teams that work best are individuals who are different in almost every aspect and know how to treat each other in order to achieve the task goal at hand.
